What we do
The ABACUS Project aims at actually achieving the engagement of Young people, both Students and NEET, inhabitants the hydrographic basins of Oreto River and Belìce River (Western Sicily, Italy) in co-creating and cooperating through a "community of knowledge and interpretation" of territorial "Cultural Commons" and socio-economic assets, by means of innovative approaches such as emotional/sentiment/experience web-mapping and many other enabling activities to stimulate skills, competences and professionalism.
Our social impact
Many European and national initiatives have been already undertaken to make people aware of the relevance of Cultural Heritage, Identity and Cultural Diversity in the complex evolution of new economies, also given «that objects and places are not, in themselves, what is important about cultural heritage. They are important because of the meanings and uses that people attach to them and the values they represent» (2005 Faro Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society).
Nevertheless, especially young people still demonstrates to have a specific uncertainty in dealing directly with the Cultural Heritage and the Identity, and more specifically in understanding the potential of cultural assets, both material and immaterial, in allowing them to invent and develop their own innovative jobs around these collective assets.
Therefore, the ABACUS Project presents itself as a very innovative and disruptive proposal due to its aim to actually accompany&support teens, NEET, students, young next scholars&researchers, in (I) deeply feeling and becoming aware of this cultural and economic potential, both for their life and that one of their Families and Communities, (II) understanding with which theoretical, technical, administrative-juridical, sociological, anthropological and economic knowledge&tools to concretely “act for” their Cultural Commons, and (III) developing by themselves an innovative job starting indeed from the innovative role of “Cultural Commons’ Honorary Ambassador”, to be adequately defined through a real contractualization between young in-pectore Ambassadors and local government bodies, school and cultural institutions, networks of cultural, technological and touristic sectors, cultural and creative industries, and any other stakeholder.
Therefore a sub-project of the ABACUS Project will be represented by the "Social Spin-off 4 NEET" Project that is intended to drive young people through a personal, not individual and rather partecipatory path in (I) constructing their own candidacy to assume the innovative role of “Cultural Commons’ Honorary Ambassador” of a given cultural asset and territorial context, and (II) developing their own innovative job around these Cultural Commons.
The candidacy will be prepared and launched through the web&mobile collaborative platform, as said, supplied with: webGIS + digital library + 3Dprint & delivery services + social-ἀγορά, and operating as an enhancing toolkit, namely "Social Spin-off 4 NEET" web platform, for knowledge retrieving and organization, collaborative web mapping, social communication and promotion, disseminating 3Dmodels.
Focusing on the candidate’s skills, entrepreneurship potential, “dreams” and new ideas of management&exploitation of specific Cultural Commons, "Social Spin-off 4 NEET" Project will allow in-pectore Ambassadors to design, firstly, and then tune and promote their own cultural and job-self-construction path, both to be voted by their pairs and Communities, and possibly supported in administrative-juridical, operational as well as financial terms by all public/private stakeholders interested in specific cultural assets and territorial contexts.
By voting the candidate through the "Social Spin-off 4 NEET" Project, pairs, Communities and stakeholders will sustain and proactively orient actual agreements between the candidate, on one hand, and local government bodies, school and cultural institutions, networks of cultural, technological and touristic sectors, cultural and creative industries, in order to officialize the role of the in-pectore “Cultural Common’ Honorary Ambassador” and to grant to her/him the necessary cultural and economic resources to initiate her/him job-self-construction path, thanks to a process of place-based “social spin-off”.
The concept of the "Social Spin-off 4 NEET" Project foresees in all the phases the direct engagement of many young people, also referring to networks that we will be developing in next months within the “ABACUS” Project, with the aim to support and empower young Communities in social, cultural and employment dynamics, improving their aggregation and socialization forms and places in the western part of the Sicily. The “ABACUS” Project will be implemented during a period of 24 months since the funding agreement decision will be issued by the Regional Administration, therefore it would represent a very good chance for a better implementation of "Social Spin-off 4 NEET" Project.
Anyways, the extended cultural and educational networks we and our project partners hold since many years and in different sectors (local government bodies and public institutions, school&education, educational and professional training, cultural heritage, agri&food, tourism, natural sites, landscape and environment safeguard), will ensure a great diffusion and support to purposes and actions of the "Social Spin-off 4 NEET" Project, and a wider engagement of young people and public.
From a technological point of view, we would like to design, implement, collaboratively test and release the "Social Spin-off 4 NEET" web platform being supported by GIS Cloud, a USA/Europe software house leader in the development of cloud-based, web-mapping and collaborative, crowdsourcing-oriented solutions, employed in many world’s cultural, humanitarian, societal, infrastructural contexts, both public and private.
Therefore, Our aim is to (I) develop and implement the ABACUS Project as well as the "Social Spin-off 4 NEET" Project two paradigms as better as possible, (II) present and disseminate them, as wider as possible, during many different conferences and events dedicated to young people’s and cultural policies, fairs, schools’ conventions, and through local and national media (tv, radio, web, social media, press), and, nonetheless, (III) integrate their respective outcomes and conceptual architecture in new project proposals for granting to this initiative next funding opportunities at local/regional, national and international level, and, consequently, new theoretical, methodological, technological and applicative improvements.
Our purpose, therefore, will be firstly to make ABACUS Project web platform and the intertwined "Social Spin-off 4 NEET" web platform more and more easily usable as innovative job-self-construction instruments within cultural sectors, promoting the process of place-based “social spin-off” that, we trust, can actually stimulate and give birth to many new and innovative job profiles, intimately and knowingly interrelated with Cultural Heritage, Identity, Cultural Diversity, in other words: to Cultural Commons.
Our efforts, in this specific perspective, will be all oriented to implement a truly scalable solution for many young people of the Sicily and, then, for many other ones in different European and extra-European cultural, societal, economic, territorial contexts.
In this perspective, we will foster our institutional networks to grant all the necessary officiality to the ABACUS Project as well as the "Social Spin-off 4 NEET" Project.
