The DNA that encodes the biological information needed to enable and sustain life is made up of much smaller molecules known as "nucleotides." With these organic compounds being assembled into more complex ones called "nucleic acids," nucleotides serve as the very foundation of the DNA and RNA strands that many are so familiar with.
One particular type of nucleotide plays an equally significant role in the process of aging. Unfortunately, these telomeres gradually shorten over time, with a process that revolves around an enzyme called "telomerase" being the body's only way of repairing them. In the cells of older people, telomeres will be characteristically shorter than in those of younger peers, however, as the efficiency of this process tends to slow and deteriorate over time.
