Tips for Taking Care of Hairpieces
Wigs have a limited lifespan even if you take very good care of them, so it's important to understand what steps are necessary to prolong their lifespan. The care for ladies wigs depends on the type of wig, with synthetic and human hair requiring slightly different care needs.
With human hair wigs, hair can be styled each time it's worn, just like with real hair. However, you need to wash and condition it with special products meant for highly treated hair. Otherwise, the hair may dry out and the wig may become damaged. It's important to be very gentle with the hair so as not to damage it. Wigs typically only need to be washed every 10 or 12 times you wear them, and the more often they're washed, the shorter their lifetime.
The best ladies wigs made with synthetic hair require less care than those made with human hair. Many of these wigs cannot be heat-styled, although there are some that are heat-friendly. These wigs are meant to stay in about the same style as they had when they were purchased, so they're a good option for those that don't want to have to fuss with their hair too much. They need to be cleaned with special wig shampoos and conditioners, otherwise, they'll get very tangled and the texture may be damaged because regular shampoo and conditioner include chemicals that are too harsh for wigs.
Brush the wig before washing it to remove any tangles. Soak the wig in a mix of shampoo and cold water and then conditioner and cold water and then rinse it gently rather than rubbing the shampoo and conditioner into it. Don't use hairspray or shine spray, and don't dry it using a hair dryer, as even the best wigs can be damaged this way. Use combs and brushes designed for use with hairpieces as well. It's best to have a professional make any major style changes to limit the risk of damaging the wig. Don't shower with or sleep with the hairpiece on. Store wigs properly and keep them covered up when not in use so they won't get dusty or tangled.
If you've still got natural hair, be sure to take care of it as well or it could become damaged by wearing a wig too much. Keep it clean and pulled back so it doesn't show under the wig, and put a wig cap on to help protect it.
