Our project challenges existing power dynamics with the aim of empowering local organisations in a more holistic and disruptive manner.

Each year over 64bn USD are ineffectively donated because of a lack of fair market representation and easy access to reliable information about the most impactful non-profits in low-middle income countries (LMIC). Over 50% of foundations have no paid staff and take on average 9 months every year to establish new grantee partnerships. Conversely, a small NGO can lose up to 1,500 manhours in application processes to secure one grant because approximately 75% of all grant applications are ineligible before or at the first reading. Time and money which can be better spent achieving impact, is lost.

FieldWorks envisions a societal platform that functions as a marketplace to connect local civil society organisations to responsible funders. We want to leverage opportunities that arise from blockchain to ensure that data is transparent and ownership is in the hands of those that contribute it to the ecosystem. We aim to build applications leveraging mobile technology that expand participation in the ecosystem from only funders and grassroots organisations, to relevant grassroots stakeholders and the communities are served by our non-profit members.

Because the sector is unstructured and fragmented (in terms of data and information) our first step is to create a curated online platform. Conceptually, a “LinkedIn network” of non-profit organisational profiles with a simple funder / grantee rating mechanism. Nonprofits will only be able to join by referral (via either by peers or funders). We then intelligently connect funders to the detailed grant-ready profiles of those non-profits. The effort is thus reversed, reducing the cost and wasted time of developing partnerships. Funders look for non-profits, pre-screen their profiles, and target the best candidates. Our full solution envisions creating an ecosystem built on distributed agency, leveraging the input of trusted funders and grassroots development networks, as well as our NGO members in order to aggregate information and build an accurate profile of a local NGO member without unnecessarily burdening it. Over time we wish to expand this to involve local stakeholders from the communities served by our member organisations, leveraging mobile technology to expand participation.
