Ciudadano Inteligente seeks to strengthen Latin American democracies through openness -understood as the promotion of the principles of citizen participation, collaboration and transparency- using technology, in order to empower and increase the action of civil society and citizens. Our 3 strategic priorities are: promoting legislation and best practices that improve transparency and participation; empowering and promoting a more influential civil society (CSO) and citizenship; and innovating in the way governments interact with citizens.
We have defined key strategic areas: advocacy for democracy strengthening, and tools to promote democratic change. Our advocacy area focuses on advocacy strategies and campaigns at the national level (we have teams working in Brazil and Chile), developing tools and methodologies that can be replicated in other countries in the region. We want to highlight 3 key projects in this area: the following up of compromises that candidates took with citizens and CSO during the 2017 elections (president and parliamentarians); the further developing of a platform for the participation of children and teenagers (Levanta La Mano); and the launching of a secure whistleblowing platform (Chileleaks) and a regional whistleblowing network (Latamleaks). These 3 projects involve close collaboration with citizens through platforms and technology for the common good.
The second strategic area transfers our advocacy experience and tools to emerging leaders (through our Advocacy School), organizations (through Estratega), and groups of organizations working towards solving a public problem (through our LabCivico methodology).
We have also defined 2 transversal areas of work, communications and sustainability. Communications’ work is focused not only in communicating our projects and work, but also on creating narratives and strategies that mobilize citizens in the strengthening of democracy. Sustainability focuses on replicating and escalating our impact through the redeployment of our methodologies and platforms in other local, national and regional contexts.
