NaTakallam is a digital social venture that connects Arabic learners around the world with displaced persons (mostly Syrian and Iraqi refugees, and IDPs in the Middle East) for language practice over Skype. Many displaced people face linguistic, cultural and legal barriers to finding employment, which is a tremendous waste of human capital. We find, vet, and train displaced people to become language conversation partners through a user-friendly digital process. Focusing on Arabic for the time being, NaTakallam offers affordable and flexible language practice with native speakers that can be tailored to users’ needs and interests. On the other end, the platform offers a gainful income opportunity to displaced people who face language challenges and restrictive labor policies in their country of resettlement. Thus, refugees gain a dignifying source of income, enabling them to pursue their interests and participate meaningfully in the digital and local economy all while fostering global intercultural exchange and raising awareness on the refugee crisis.
