Founded in 2008 by Jaume Catarineu, Ubiquat Technologies made its first steps as an software engineering company specialized in digital payments. Around 2013 Ubiquat’s team started to make research in the complementary currencies field. That interest brought the Digipay4Growth project, and ICT grant that lasted 3 years (2014-2016) and introduced in Santa Coloma de Gramenet (pop. 120,000) the first digital local currency with public expenditures channelized through it in southern Europe.
The project ended on December 31 st 2016 with excellent review from the EC. While improving Santa Coloma’s currency with further channeling (public procurement, salaries, cash-in...), now Ubiquat is engaging new projects like the VilaWatt UIA 3-year grant, which is an energy currency model. This experience, among its research in cryptocurrencies, sets Ubiquat right now as the leader in the state-of-the-art of digital social currencies in Spain.
