Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa (SCML) is the oldest and biggest Portuguese charity. More than 500 years after its foundation, still pursues its original mission to improve the quality of life of the individuals and communities in the city of Lisbon and to contribute to the well-being of its underprivileged and vulnerable citizens in particular.
On a daily basis, SCML reaches out thousands of children, young people, elderly and different vulnerable populations, such as people with disabilities, unemployed or the homeless. Its network of services and facilities is accessible and prepared to respond to those in need, irrespective of their age or social problems.
Best known for its social welfare work, SCML is also an active agent in the fields of health, education, vocational training, culture, heritage, scientific research and lately in entrepreneurship and social innovation. It is also responsible for operating the lottery games, thanks to an exclusive concession from the Portuguese State. The revenue from these games goes to social causes all around the country.
The Department of Entrepreneurship and Social Economy reinforces SCML's capacity for innovation by supporting the development of new ideas and entrepreneurship initiatives with social value.
